Social media case studies that connect Gen Z activity to real campaign results
Gen Z social media case studies show what each campaign measured, which platform metrics moved, and how to check a case study before copying its playbook.
What to take away
- Gen Z social media case studies return to six campaigns most often: Duolingo on TikTok, e.l.f. Cosmetics' #eyeslipsface and Gymshark's creator roster.
- Dunkin's Charli drink, Ocean Spray's cranberry-juice video and Aerie's #AerieREAL round out the list. Each campaign measured something different.
- Ask what the campaign counted before you ask whether it worked: reach, user-made content, and revenue are not interchangeable.
- A case study transfers only when your audience, platform and budget match the original.
- Get the numbers from the brand's own filing or press release, not from a listicle.
- Read the FTC advertising substantiation policy before you repeat a vendor's claim in your own deck.
Six Gen Z campaigns with measured results
Duolingo on TikTok. The language app built its following on an unhinged green owl mascot posting daily, not on paid media. Duolingo has said publicly that its TikTok growth came from posting constantly and cheaply.
As of 2026 the account has more than 10 million followers, and individual videos regularly pass a million views. The measurable output is follower count and engagement rate, not signups. Copy it only if you can staff daily posting and tolerate a voice your legal team will question.
e.l.f. Cosmetics and #eyeslipsface. In 2019 the beauty brand ran a hashtag challenge built on a short original track. TikTok's own published case material credited it with more than four billion video views and millions of user-made posts.
The measurable output is participation: how many people made their own video. That is a different number from sales, and the brand did not publish a revenue figure.
Gymshark's athlete and ambassador model. The fitness apparel company grew through hundreds of micro influencers posting gym content before it ran large campaigns. A minority investment from General Atlantic in 2020 reportedly valued Gymshark at about 1 billion pounds.
The measurable output is attributable revenue per creator code. This is the most copyable of the six for a small budget, because you can start with ten creators.
Dunkin' and Charli D'Amelio. In September 2020 Dunkin' put the then-16-year-old TikTok dancer's usual order on the menu as The Charli, a cold brew. The chain reported a spike in app downloads around the launch and published no dollar figure.
The measurable output is app downloads and drink orders, and both fade as soon as the creator moves on.
Ocean Spray and Nathan Apodaca. In September 2020 Apodaca posted a TikTok of himself skateboarding and drinking cranberry juice to Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams". The 1977 track returned to the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 12 that October.
Ocean Spray later gave him a cranberry-red truck of his own. The measurable output is chart position and earned reach, not juice sales.
Aerie's #AerieREAL. American Eagle's lingerie brand ran unretouched photography with body-positive ambassadors from 2014. Executives credited the campaign with more than 20 straight quarters of same-store sales growth by 2019.
That period also covered new store openings and product changes, so the ads are one variable among several. The metric is comparable-store sales, not follower counts.
What each case actually measured
| Campaign | Platform | Primary metric | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duolingo | TikTok | Followers, engagement rate | App installs |
| e.l.f. #eyeslipsface | TikTok | Video views, user posts | Product sales |
| Gymshark | Instagram, YouTube | Revenue per creator code | Brand awareness |
| Dunkin' x Charli D'Amelio | TikTok | App downloads, drink orders | Repeat purchases |
| Ocean Spray x Nathan Apodaca | TikTok | Chart position, earned reach | Juice sales |
| Aerie #AerieREAL | Instagram, YouTube | Same-store sales growth | That the ads caused it |
The gap in the middle column is where most pitch decks cheat. A view is not a visit, and a visit is not a sale.

Check a case before you copy it
- Find the original sourcethe brand's press release, filing, or the platform's own case library.
- Note the date. A 2019 TikTok result does not describe 2026 reach.
- Write down the metric the brand chose, and the metric you care about.
- Check whether the brand paid for the reach it reported.
- Confirm the audience age band matches yours.
- Decide what result would make you stop.
If the source is a vendor's slide, treat it as a lead. The GAO data reliability guide sets out how to assess a dataset against its intended use, and the same questions apply to a campaign number.
Check a case before copying
- Find the original source
- Note the date
- Write down the brand's metric
- Check whether reach was paid
- Confirm audience age band matches
- Decide what result would stop you
Where a case study stops being evidence
A case study describes one brand, one audience and one period. It cannot tell you what your audience will do.
The NIST AI RMF Playbook offers voluntary actions for teams using automated tools in a workflow. It helps when a scheduling or targeting tool shapes what you publish, but it is not a certification and it ranks nothing.
Keep your own record of what you ran, what it cost and what changed. The CISA logging guidance explains why organizations retain and review event records. Logs show what happened, not whether it worked.
Before you brief an agency on any of this, read how Gen Z consumer behavior case studies are built and where the numbers come from.
Then set your own targets against Gen Z social media benchmarks rather than against a brand ten times your size.
If you want the Gen z social media with the guesswork removed, start there before you build the brief.
Common questions
Are these case studies still relevant?
The mechanics are. Duolingo's daily posting habit still works; the specific reach numbers from 2019 do not transfer. Re-check current platform data before you quote a figure.
What if my brand cannot post daily?
Pick the Gymshark model instead. Ten creators on a revenue-share code is cheaper to run than a full content team, and the metric is money rather than attention.
The Common Gen Z social media questions that come up in nearly every planning meeting are worth working through before you commit to either model.
How do I verify a campaign result?
Go to the brand's own announcement or the platform's published case library, note the date, and write down which metric was reported. If you cannot find a primary source, do not repeat the number.
